communication: there is no doubt in my mind that
his reputation suffered because he was never very
keen about writing books, particularly in the later
stages of his career when he was at the height of
his fame. He wasn’t prepared to sit down and grind
away at a book and worry about its structure and
whether its seemed coherent or not.
He really preferred to stand up and talk out his
ideas and as I say, particularly in the later stages
of his career. He did publish a lot of books, but
they were almost sort of willfully obscure and
incoherent. And that’s partly because McLuhan
just simply couldn’t be troubled to rework them or
